Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is going to be held for the second time on 29th January, 2012. Since it is being held for the second time, naturally there is not much study materials for CTET exam available on the net or on the market. So how do you prepare for CTET exam?

This is the focus of current blog post, which aims to point you to those sample/model papers for CTET exam as well as the prep/guide books. If you do not know about CTET and would like to apply for it, just visit my exhaustive blog article titled: CTET 2012 Notification, Eligibility & Forms. Another blog post titled: CTET Syllabus and Structure gives you the syllabus for this exam.

In the very beginning let me tell you that till very recently, recruitment for CBSE schools were done by CBSE through KVS PGT/TGT recruitment exam. Last KVS PGT/TGT recruitment exam was conducted 8th/9th April 2011. CTET is expected to replace KVS PGT/TGT recruitment exam. Hence you can find that pattern of CTET exam is almost similar to KVS PGT/TGT exam – even the syllabus. Therefore, for the first year (since no previous years paper or guide book for CTET is available), you can use the sample papers & books of KVS PGT/TGT exam to prepare for CTET exam.

Having said that, let us find what is the pattern of CTET exam.

CTET Exam Pattern:

CTET is being held for finding teacher eligibility for teaching two groups of students:

i) Class I-V: You have to appear in CTET Paper-I.

ii) Class VI-VIII: You have to appear in CTET Paper-II.

If you would like to teach both the groups, you have to appear in both Paper-I & Paper-II.

You have to obtain minimum 60% marks in these papers to qualify in CTET, following which CTET certificate would be given which will be valid for 6 years.

There is no restriction to the number of times you can appear in CTET – also even after getting 60+% marks, you can appear in CTET again to better your scores. It would be held annually each year.

(b) For Social studies/Social Science Teacher: Social Science

(c) For any other teacher – either (a) or (b).

This blog post is being made as a sequel to my previous blog article titled: CDS Exam (I) 2012: Notification, Eligibility & Forms, which tells you what is a CDS exam and how to apply for the same along with the eligibilities required and where to get the CDS exam forms.

The focus of this blog post is on providing you the study materials for CDS exam – by first telling what is the exam pattern and than giving you the sources of sample papers, guide books and the coaching institutes to help you prepare for the CDS exam.

CDS Exam Pattern:
CDS selection process consists of following three stages:
1.0 CDS Written exam.
2.0 SSB Interview.
3.0 Medical test.

How many candidates appear in each CDS exam? I had made an analysis based on CDS-II Exam data from 58th UPSC Annual Report (2007-08) and following is the finding:

As you can see – number of candidate applying/appearing in the CDS exam is showing a downward trend – a good sign for you (you would have less number of competitors)!. While another good information you can find from above table is that only 60% of those who applies for CDS exam appears in the CDS exam – thus 40% of applicants is eliminated automatically!

Getting back to CDS Written exam pattern, you would have two papers if you appear for OTA, Chennai while three papers, if you appear CDS exam for other three defence institutes:

CDS exam pattern for IMA, NA & AFA:CDS exam pattern for OTA:As you can find from above exam pattern – you have 1 minute for each question (120 questions, 120 minutes) in English & GK paper while you have 1.2 minute per question for Maths paper (You do not have to appear in Maths paper, if you are appearing CDS exam for OTA, Chennai). Thus you have sufficient time for answering CDS papers – hence accuracy more than speed is the key to doing good in CDS exam.

You should also be accurate in answering the questions because there is negative marking - 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer!

CDS Exam Answer sheets:

CDS Answer sheets are of type Optical Response Sheet (ORS), which looks like the one shown at right. You have to mark the correct answer by darkening the option circle completely with HB pencil – right method along with some wrong method is shown in the screenshot.

This is important, because many examinees marks their answers incorrectly on the ORS answer sheet, as a result of which they are not selected.

Before going any further, let us know more about what is CDS Exam.

What is CDS Exam:

Combined Defence Services (CDS) is the entrance-cum-recruitment exam conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) jointly for four elite defence academies of India:

Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.

Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.

Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala.

Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai.

CDS is conducted twice every year – in mid-February (called CDS-I) and in mid-September (called CDS-II). Subsequent to CDS written exam, shortlisted candidates are called for Interview, conducted by SSB (Services Selection Board). It is only after candidates clear the SSB Interview & the subsequent medical test that they are finally selected for the four defence academies.

The training conducted in these defence academies lasts for 49 to 74 weeks, depending on which institute you join in. At the end of the training period, you are commissioned as Lieutenant in Army/Navy or as a Flying Officer in Air force.

Even during the training at these Defence Academies, the trainees (called as Gentleman/ Lady Cadets) are given fixed stipend of Rs. 21000/- per month for the entire duration of training.

CDS (I) Exam 2012 Important dates:

Date of notification & Online Form availability: 29/10/2011 (Sat)

Last date for submission of CDS-I 2012 forms: 28/11/2011 (Mon).

Date of CDS (I) Exam 2012: 12/02/2012 (Sun)

CDS (I) Exam 2012 Vacancies:

In each CDS Exam, 500 to 550 candidates are selected. You can find the institute-wise break –up of seats/vacancies for CDS-I 2012 as given at right.

Eligibilities for CDS exam is given below institute-wise:

NA: Min. 19 years, Max: 22 years. (DOB:not earlier than 2nd January, 1991 (2nd January, 1989 in case of NCC Naval Wing ‘C’ Certificate holders) and not later than 1st January, 1994.

AFA: Min. 19 years, Max: 23 years. (DOB: not earlier than 2nd January, 1990 and not later than 1st January, 1994)

IMA: Min. 19 years, Max: 24 years. (DOB: not earlier than 2nd January, 1989 and not later than 1st January, 1994)

OTA: Min. 19 years, Max: 25 years. (DOB:not earlier than 2nd January, 1988 and not later than 1st January, 1994)

Academic Eligibilities:

Educational Qualifications for CDS exam is listed below institute-wise:

IMA, Dehradun & OTA, Chennai: Graduation.

NA, Ezhimala: B.Sc. (with Physics & Mathematics) or Bachelor of Engineering.

AFA, Hyderabad: Graduation (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Final year Degree students can also apply provided they can provide the proof passing above qualification at a later date to be notified by UPSC.

The qualifications must be obtained from a recognised university or equivalent.

Physical Standard Eligibilities for CDS Exam:

On top of above Age & Educational eligibilities, you also need to possess the physical standard, as given in "APPENDIX IV" in page-6 of the Notification.

CDS (I) Exam 2012 Online Form:

Till CDS 2011, you were able to apply both online & offline for CDS exam. But from CDS 2012 onwards you can apply only online!

There are two stages of online application - in PartI you fill general data while in Part-I you fill more specific data.

After submitting the online form, you do not need to send the hard copy of the application to UPSC, but retain with you for any later use.

CDS Exam is held through out the length and breadth of the country in following 41 city/towns:
