British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. We connect people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and other countries.
The British Committee for Relations with Other Countries was formed in 1934 by Sir Reginald Leeper with the support of the Foreign Office. Its role was to improve the understanding of Britain across the world. This included arranging for lecturers and books to be sent overseas, supporting British institutes and societies and English schools in other countries, arranging visits for individuals to the UK, and organising music performances and art exhibitions, much as we do today. The main focus was on the countries of the Middle East, Mediterranean, Europe and Latin America.
In 1935 the name changed to the British Council for Relations with Other Countries and in 1936 it was shortened to simply the British Council.
